Out of more than 400 communes in Norway, Trysil is number 11 in area. It is bigger than the EU-country Luxemburg. Even so, it is far from densely populated. There are only 6800 people in Trysil.
65% of Trysil is covered by productive woodland. Less than 3% is agricultural land. What is left is barren land in the mountains, marshland, lakes, rivers and creeks.
The longest water-system in Scandinavia floats through Trysil. It starts in the Swedish lake of Rogen and ends in the ocean near the Swedish town Gothenburg. The highest mountain is Tverrfjellet, 1209 m, but more known is Trysilfjellet, where the most famous area of ski-tourism in Norway is located. Trysil has old traditions of skiing. Here the Worlds first ski-club was founded in 1861. Trysil also had the first female ski-jumper in the World.
Our nature is still intact. You may meet bears and wolves in our woodlands, maybe also lynx and woverines. Trysil has the largest population of moose in Norway. Approximately 800 moose are shot by hunters each year.
Our climate is harsh. Normally we have snow from late october till early May. Some winters temperature sink to below minus 40 C. Even so, the summers are relatively warm. Temperature may rise to 30 C!
